Feria of Cholula

The Feria de Cholula lasts for about two weeks and culminates with the celebration of the Independence of Mexico on September 15th/16th. 250,000 people come from around the world to experience this truly remarkable event (and the centro is jam-packed with people). I took a few pictures of the fireworks before realizing that I have a fireworks setting on my camera but I still think the pictures are kind of cool. I was waiting in the Zocalo of Cholula to participate in the shout of Mexico's Independence ("Viva Mexico") but at midnight nothing was going on so I went home. My neighbors were celebrating until about 4am when I finally was able to go to sleep.

So here are some pictures of my campus. Most of the buildings look the same and it's difficult to take pictures when a lot of people are around. Yes, we do have peacocks (pavo real in Spanish) living up on campus. There is one mom that just had babies but I couldn't find her and the little ones. Sometimes in class, you can hear them calling to each other. They can produce quite loud noises (perhaps communiques to each other?). This first picture is of the building (the hacienda) where four of my five classes are taught. It's really the most beautiful building up on campus and we are fortunate to have most of our classes in such a peaceful setting.

Images of Cholula

Okay, so this first image is of me, myself and I. I just wanted to upload a picture of myself so that, in a way, I am looking back at anyone viewing this blog. I also just wanted to show a few more shots of the landscape that one can see from my house. Right after I took a couple of pictures of the amazing rainbow, it started to dump rain and I had to run inside. The final picture is of my new friend, Centli. My friend Paloma and I went out to lunch at a vegetarian restaurant called Pachamama, in the centro of Cholula. They have only four or five tables and one of the tables is in the "jardin" at the back of the restaurant. I absolutely loved the food and when Paloma and I first sat down at the one table in the "jardin", an older gentlemen was washing dishes in a sink right by us and all of a sudden this ladder drops down from the roof and two guys come down (one of whom was our server!). Who knows what they were doing up on the roof but it was very interesting and I love Mexico for these kinds of experiences. The dog, Zentli, insisted on sitting on my lap and she sat on my lap for almost the whole meal.
